In February 2007, a group of Society members published the revised Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroendocrine Gastrointestinal Tumors in Neuroendocrinology. This collection of papers was generated at the first consensus conference, held in Frascati, Italy, in November 2005.
The conference was dedicated to forming consensus on diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors of foregut origin, stomach, duodenum and pancreas. A standard approach based on WHO tumors classification was adopted with 63 experts and practicing clinicians evaluating their experience and evidence-based data toward better management of patients with this neglected cancer disease.
Papers are organized on an anatomical basis, specific issues are discussed and minimal consensus statements defined and highlighted for easy recognition. Topics include Classification and Epidemiology; Clinical presentation/Prognosis/Heredity; Diagnostic Procedures (imaging-lab tests); Pathology and Genetics; Surgical Therapy (curative and palliative); Loco-Regional Ablative Therapy; Liver Transplantation; Medical Therapy (biotherapy and chemotherapy); Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy and Follow-Up scheduling.
ENETS followed up the Frascati conference with a second meeting in 2006. Revisions of the Society's diagnostic and treatment guidelines for midgut and hindgut tumors were published in Neuroendocrinology in early 2008.
